The company Soške elektrarne, one of the subsidiary companies of the company Holding Slovenske elektrarne, is celebrating its 60th anniversary of existence. In these 60 years the company Soške elektrarne with its basic mission - the production of electrical energy - developed into an efficient company thanks to its stable development and market oriented strategy, to its high capital of know-how, to its sense of appurtenance to the working collective, the nature and to its environment.

In September 1947 the Primorska region was annexed to Yugoslavia according to the provisions of the Paris Peace Treaty. At the same the electro-energetic facilities, which were constructed in that area prior to the First World War and in the period between the two World Wars: i.e. the power plants, the transmission lines, the distribution stations as well as the belonging premises (buildings and plots of ground), were annexed too. The new proprietor, the Yugoslav state, founded on 18 November 1947 the company Soške elektrarne d. o. o., which took over all ten then operating power plants in the Primorska region. At that time this became the biggest production company in Slovenia with a total power capacity of the plants of about 52 MW. It covered thus more than 40 percent of the requirements of the Slovenian consumers.

The company, during all the years of its existence, has very successfully confronted the numerous changes in the organization and technology.

Since the company has always been searching for up-to-date technology solutions it was very often the first to introduce important novelties. The power plant in Solkan for example, was thus the first remote-controlled power plant in the state connected by an optical fiber cable. The company was also the initiator and founder of the Electrician Training School. With the construction of the first Pumping - Storage hydro power plant in Avče the company Soške elektrarne broke new ground also in this field. All the five big and the 21 small hydro power plants, today driven by the Soča River, are completely automated, remote controlled and regular staff free, which is a rarity even in the most developed states.

The history of the company Soške elektrarne is starting already its seventh decade. During all these years the company Soške elektrarne took care of an optimum operation of the hydro power plants and the undisturbed electrical energy supply. However, the water potential is not exploited at any cost but in synergy with the environment.

At the occasion of the jubilee Commemorative proceedings titled “Zgodba o luči / The story of the light” with many photos were published by the company Soške elektrarne together with the Regional Archives of Nova Gorica.
